*Vayippol melo-qomato artzah* (וַיִּפֹּל מְלֹא-קֹמָתוֹ אַרְצָה)—'he fell the fullness of his height to the ground.' This is the man who once stood head and shoulders above all Israel (1 Sam. 9:2)—his great height was his royal distinction. Now that very height measures only the distance of his collapse. The fall is total: physical, spiritual, dynastic. His fasting adds its own irony: a king with no access to God has also denied himself the most basic human sustenance. Both translations render 'full length' to echo that earlier portrait of Saul's stature, now inverted into a measure of ruin.
