The repeated imperfect verbs throughout verses 9–11 are iterative—describing habitual, repeated action across sixteen months, not a single raid. The total-destruction language (*lo y'chayeh ish v'ishah*, "left alive neither man nor woman") deliberately echoes *cherem* vocabulary from the conquest narratives (cf. Josh. 6:21; 1 Sam. 15:3). The dark irony is that Dawid deploys sacred-destruction methodology purely to silence witnesses and sustain his deception of Achish.
