*Mishpato* ("his practice") is drawn from *mishpat*, the weighty legal-covenantal term normally rendered "justice" or "judgment" (cf. Deut. 16:18–20; Ps. 89:14). Here it carries the sense of "established procedure" or "habitual conduct." The word choice is quietly ironic: the same term used for covenant justice describes Dawid's systematic deception. FOG renders "practice" to preserve the procedural resonance; FOG Message clarifies with "established practice."
