The Ziphites are from the tribe of Yehudah — Dawid's own tribe. Their betrayal is thus not the treachery of strangers but of kinsmen, which sharpens the wound considerably. The Yeshimon (יְשִׁימוֹן *Yeshimon*) refers to the desolate, arid wilderness of the Judean steppe — a word meaning "wasteland" or "devastation." FOG preserves "Yeshimon" as a transliteration; FOG Message uses the conventional "Jeshimon."
