Yonatan's declaration — "you shall be king" — is a remarkable act of voluntary abdication. He is the heir apparent; his words here constitute a formal yielding of the throne. "I will be your second" (מִשְׁנֶה *mishneh*) means second-in-rank, a willing subordination to the one he loves and believes God has chosen. The statement "even Sha'ul my father knows this" is either devastating disclosure of Sha'ul's self-deception or a piercing admission that the family itself recognises the dynastic transfer. FOG renders "your second" to preserve the court-rank flavour; FOG Message uses "stand at your side" for relational warmth.
