The call to קַדְּשׁוּ (*qaddeshu*, "consecrate/sanctify yourselves") likely involved ritual washing and abstaining from sources of impurity, echoing the preparations at Sinai (Exod. 19:10–15). That Samuel himself performs the consecration of Jesse and his sons sets them apart before YHWH before any divine selection is made — a subtle signal that they have entered sacred space and sacred time. The repetition of "sacrifice" (זָבַח, *zavah*) three times in this verse underscores the liturgical cover story, while the text's deeper irony is that a far more significant anointing is about to take place beneath it. Both translations preserve this repetition.
