Footnotes

His eyes brightened' (*wattāʾornāh ʿênāyw*) uses the root *ʾwr* ('to shine, give light')—the same root as *ʾôr* (light) in Gen. 1:3. The honey restores and illumines; it is the land's own gift ('flowing with milk and honey') being withheld from the troops by their king's rash oath. Yonatan's brightening eyes form a vivid counterpoint to the army's faintness. FOG preserves the luminous verb 'brightened'; FOG Message renders it as 'eyes lit up.'
