The label *Ivrim* ('Hebrews') is almost exclusively used by non-Israelites or by Israelites speaking to foreigners—it is the outsider's designation, often carrying contempt. The image of people 'coming out of holes' frames these soldiers as vermin or fugitives. The Philistine contempt sets up the divine reversal about to unfold. FOG preserves 'Ivrim'; FOG Message uses the traditional 'Hebrews.'
