The term *netziv* (garrison or military prefect) carries ambiguity — it could denote a Philistine military officer or an occupying fortified post, which affects whether this was an assassination or a raid. More striking is the sudden appearance of *Ivrim* ('Hebrews') — throughout Samuel this term tends to surface in moments of social or political crisis, often used by outsiders or in contexts of ethnic distinction, suggesting it carries a class or political edge beyond mere ethnic identity. FOG preserves *Ivrim* in transliteration to honour that edge; FOG Message renders the traditional English 'Hebrews.'
