The *Gei ha-Tzevo'im* ('Valley of Hyenas/Jackals') is a strikingly evocative geographical name — *tzevo'im* denotes scavengers associated in the ancient world with death, desolation, and the frontier margins of ordered life. The raiding column pushing toward this wilderness edge extends Philistine terror to the very limits of inhabited Israelite territory. FOG preserves the transliterated place-name to honour the Hebrew; FOG Message renders 'Valley of Hyenas' to make the desolation felt in English.
