The *mashchit* ('destroyer/raider') is the same word used for the destroying angel in the Exodus plague (Ex. 12:23) — whether or not the echo is intentional, its resonance is bitter: the destroyer now ranges freely through Israel's own territory. The three-pronged raid suggests coordinated economic terror — burning crops, seizing livestock, neutralising guerrilla resistance — rather than a pitched battle.
