Footnotes

This command plants the seed of catastrophe in chapter 13, where Saul will not wait the full seven days and presumes to offer the sacrifice himself. The instruction here establishes the precise terms of obedience on which his kingship will stand or fall. Gilgal is also laden with covenant memory — it was Israel's first encampment after crossing the Jordan, the site of circumcision and covenant renewal (Josh 5). A new era of leadership is inaugurated at a place where Israel's identity was re-constituted.
