Mashal (מָשָׁל)—rendered 'proverb'—is broader than the English word: it encompasses proverb, parable, allegory, and instructive comparison. The 3,000 meshalim form the imaginative reservoir from which the book of Proverbs draws; the 1,005 songs provide the background of the Song of Songs. This verse frames the canonical Solomonic corpus—Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Pss 72 and 127—as the surviving residue of a vast creative output.
