Under his vine and under his fig tree' is the Hebrew idiom for settled, prosperous, fearless peace—a man on his own land, with shade and fruit, unbothered by enemies. The image recurs in Mic 4:4 and Zech 3:10 as a description of the messianic age of shalom, making Solomon's reign a typological foretaste of the coming kingdom. FOG preserves the concrete imagery; FOG Message's 'his own vine' and 'his own fig tree' draw out the personal possession implied by the Hebrew pronominal suffix on each noun.
