*Bamot* (high places) were elevated outdoor shrines — often pre-Israelite Canaanite sacred sites absorbed into Israelite worship. The narrator's comment functions as a partial excuse for Solomon's own use of them: the centralisation of worship was not yet complete. But the *bamot* become an increasingly darkening motif throughout Kings, ultimately signalling syncretism and divided loyalty. The phrase 'for the name of YHWH' (*l'shem YHWH*) anticipates the theology of Deuteronomy 12 — YHWH's name, not merely His presence, is what a legitimate sanctuary houses. FOG retains the Hebrew term; FOG Message renders 'high places,' the conventional equivalent that carries its own theological freight for readers of Kings.
