The *qedeshim* (singular *qadesh*, from the root *q-d-sh*, 'holy / set apart') were male shrine-prostitutes associated with Canaanite fertility religion. The bitter irony of the term is deliberate: these were 'consecrated ones' devoted to a profane purpose. Asa had begun their expulsion (1 Kings 15:12); Y'hoshafat completes it. Their survival after Asa's reform reveals how deep the roots of cultic syncretism ran. FOG preserves *qedeshim* as a transliteration to honour the term's loaded irony; FOG Message renders 'male cult prostitutes' to make the practice explicit.
