The phrase *cheder b'cheder* — "chamber within chamber" — paints a vivid picture of a king shrinking ever inward as his empire crumbles around him. He who had besieged a city now hides in the city's innermost corners. The poetic justice of the image is unmistakable. Ironically, it is Ach'av's mercy — and not YHWH's command — that ultimately delivers him.
