*Gevirah* ('great lady / queen mother') was a formal court position carrying real political authority, not a mere honorary title — its deliberate removal was an act of state. Asa's willingness to strip his own grandmother of this office marks covenant loyalty placed above family loyalty. *Miphletset* derives from *palats* ('to shudder, tremble with horror') — an object so abominable it makes one recoil. Asherah was a Canaanite mother goddess, consort of El, whose cult centred on a carved wooden pole or image. The burning at *Nachal Kidron* (the Kidron Wadi east of Jerusalem) recurs as the site for destroying idolatrous objects in later reforms (cf. 2 Kgs 23:4–6, 12). FOG retains *gevirah* and *miphletset* for their full cultural freight; FOG Message renders them accessibly as 'queen mother' and 'horrifying idol.'
