*Bamot* (high places) were elevated worship sites, often Canaanite in origin but co-opted for syncretistic use. *Matzevot* (standing-stones / pillars) could serve as legitimate YHWH memorials (Gen. 28:18) but here functioned within pagan fertility rites. *Asherim* were wooden poles or living trees sacred to the goddess Asherah. 'On every high hill and under every lush tree' is a formulaic phrase (Deut. 12:2; 2 Kings 17:10) for comprehensive, indiscriminate idolatry—worship everywhere except the one place YHWH chose.
