The mourning cry *Hoi achi!* (הוֹי אָחִי), 'Alas, my brother!' is a standard lament formula of ancient Israelite funeral dirges—the same *hoi* used in prophetic oracles of doom (cf. Amos 5:18; Isa. 1:4) and in Jeremiah's lament over dishonoured kings (Jer. 22:18). It is the visceral, grief-soaked cry of burial. The old prophet's use of *achi* ('my brother') is arresting: despite the deception, despite the death that followed it, he embraces the dead man as kin—whether in remorse, reverence, or both, the text does not say. FOG renders the Hebrew cry directly ('Alas, my brother!') to preserve its raw liturgical force; FOG Message uses 'Oh, my brother!' for immediate emotional resonance.
