Deuteronomy 17:16 explicitly commands the king: 'He must not acquire many horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to acquire more horses.' Solomon's 1,400 chariots and 12,000 horsemen, sourced precisely from Egypt (v.28), is a pointed, deliberate violation. The narrator records this accumulation with the cadence of admiration, but Torah-literate readers hear an alarm. This is the third of the three Deuteronomic prohibitions for kings (Deut. 17:16–17) that Solomon is now systematically breaching — horses, gold, and (as ch.11 reveals) foreign wives. The summit of glory is simultaneously the anatomy of collapse.
