The Hebrew *lo atsavo* (לֹא עֲצָבוֹ) — 'never pained/grieved him' — uses the root *atsav*, which also underlies the word for deep sorrow. David's failure to discipline Adoniyahu recalls Eli's sin with his sons (1 Shmu'el 3:13) and is presented as a parental failure with political consequences. The mention that Adoniyahu was born after Avshalom places him fourth among David's sons, with three elder brothers dead — making his ambition comprehensible, if still presumptuous. FOG renders *atsavo* as 'displeased'; FOG Message sharpens it to 'crossed him.'
