He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

Footnotes

εἰδωλείῳ = "idol-temple" — specifically the dining rooms attached to Corinthian temples (such as those at the Asklepieion) where civic and social banquets were held; attendance was practically unavoidable for anyone with social standing. οἰκοδομηθήσεται ("will be built up") is Paul's stinging irony: the very "build up" verb from v.1 — used there for love's constructive work — reappears here for the disastrous "building up" of a weak conscience into sin. Both versions place the word in quotation marks to signal the irony.
