Exousiazei ('has authority over') shares its root with exousia, used throughout the New Covenant for sovereign power and right. The verse's radical symmetry — applying the identical authority claim to both spouses — directly subverts the Greco-Roman assumption of unilateral male ownership of the wife's body.
