Paul applies the creation ordinance of Genesis 2:24 to every sexual union, not only marriage — showing that intercourse itself creates a covenantal 'one flesh' bond regardless of context. The word kollomenos ('joined/cleaving') echoes the LXX of Genesis 2:24 (proskollethēsetai — 'shall cleave'), making the intertextual echo audible in Greek.
