He works from a personal encounter with Jesus first, then draws on the scholarship of respected Jewish and Christian scholars — because the church was Jewish before it was anything else, and those roots change everything about how you read Scripture.

Footnotes

θέατρον (theatron) evokes not merely a stage but the Roman triumphal procession, in which conquered prisoners were paraded through the city before execution. ἐπιθανατίους ('condemned to death') confirms this: men at the tail of the triumph, destined to die. The watching audience includes ἀγγέλοι — angelic beings — giving the spectacle cosmic dimensions consistent with Second Temple cosmology, where the affairs of God's people were witnessed by heavenly hosts.
