περικαθάρματα and περίψημα are near-synonyms of extreme contempt — filth scraped away in ritual cleansing, waste discarded as worthless. In some ancient Greek cities, a περίψημα was a human scapegoat drawn from society's lowest rungs, driven out or killed to expiate communal guilt — an image carrying faint echoes of the suffering servant. The double-stacking intensifies the degradation to its maximum.
