κοπιάω denotes labour to the point of exhaustion — not ordinary work but grinding, wearying effort. Working with one's own hands was socially degrading in Greco-Roman culture, the domain of craftsmen and slaves. This was both material hardship and a deliberate countercultural stance against the patronage system the Corinthians were embedded in, in which gentlemen did not work with their hands.
