κενὸν — 'empty/hollow' — denoting something devoid of substance or content, like an empty vessel. Sha'ul uses this word as a rhetorical anchor; it recurs in v.58 as the chapter's closing bookend. If the resurrection is false, faith is kenon (empty); because it is true, labour is not kenon (v.58). Both versions try to preserve this as a live word rather than a dead idiom.
