This verse contains one of the most startling narrative intrusions in Chronicles' genealogies: an early Ephraimite raiding party is killed by native men of Gat during an attempted cattle raid. The phrase 'born in the land' (*hannoladim ba'aretz*) identifies the Gathites as indigenous Canaanites, suggesting this event preceded the Exodus—when some Ephraimites may have already been moving through or near Philistine territory. It likely preserves an ancient tribal tradition of pre-conquest conflict entirely separate from the main Exodus narrative. The abruptness of its insertion into the genealogical register gives it the feel of a remembered wound—a grief so formative it was still being told centuries later.
