The phrase *veshavu Lechem* (וְשָׁבוּ לֶחֶם) — 'and they returned to Lechem' — is genuinely obscure. *Lechem* may refer to Bethlehem (Beit-Lechem = 'House of Bread') or simply mean 'provisions/bread,' perhaps noting a return to their homeland livelihoods. More remarkable is the Chronicler's editorial aside: *veha-devarim attikim* (וְהַדְּבָרִים עַתִּיקִים) — 'and the words/records are ancient.' This is the historian pulling back the curtain on his own sources — a rare moment of historiographical humility, acknowledging that even he is working at the edge of recoverable memory. FOG renders it as a standalone sentence; FOG Message places it as a parenthetical, following the convention of most modern translations.
