"A discerning counsellor" — Hebrew יוֹעֵץ בְּמַשְׂכִּיל (*yo'ets bemaskhil*): a counsellor of penetrating insight, one who perceives beneath the surface. The root *śākal* carries the sense of shrewdly attuned wisdom — the same root found in the *maskhil* psalms. That the Chronicler pauses mid-appointment list to commend Zecharyahu's wisdom is deliberate: gatekeeping is not merely physical. To guard what is holy requires discernment — the capacity to judge who and what may cross the threshold of the sacred. FOG renders "discerning counsellor" (UK); FOG Message uses "wise and perceptive counselor" (US) to honour both facets of the compound Hebrew phrase.
