The *Repha'im* (רְפָאִים) are a shadowy category of warriors of exceptional size, associated with pre-Israelite Canaan and the Transjordan (cf. Genesis 14:5; Deuteronomy 2:11, 20). They appear in Ugaritic texts as deceased royal warriors (*rp'um*) — giants both physical and numinous in ancient imagination. This verse opens a trilogy of Philistine giant-slayings, each answered by a named Israelite hero, collectively framing the age of David as one in which YHWH systematically dismantles every superhuman threat to His people. FOG retains 'Repha'im' as the proper name; FOG Message uses the anglicised 'Rephaim.'
