The Chronicler names David's sisters and traces his three great military nephews through their mother alone — a striking maternal designation. In the narrative books, Tzeruyyah's sons are always called 'sons of Zeruiah,' never by their father's name, suggesting she was the dominant family figure, perhaps a widow of note. Yo'av (*Joab*) becomes David's formidable and morally complex general; Asah'el (*Asahel*) is killed by Avner in 2 Samuel 2. That women are named and honoured in a genealogy of men speaks to the Chronicler's consistent practice of acknowledging those the culture might otherwise erase.
