Dawid's longing (*hit'avvah*, הִתְאַוָּה) is more than physical thirst—Beit-Lechem is his hometown, and the well by the gate is a memory of peace and home. The Hebrew idiom conveys a sigh of deep desire. His words are the pathos of a man who has won a kingdom but cannot sit at his own village well. The three warriors who act on his sigh do so not under orders but out of love—transforming a warlord's wistful wish into a supreme act of covenant loyalty.
