The location 'Pas-Dammim' (פַּס דַּמִּים) possibly means 'boundary of blood'—a grim toponym fitting the battlefield. The parallel in 2 Sam. 23:11–12 places a similar episode at a lentil field, suggesting either two distinct incidents or variant manuscript traditions. The detail that the troops had already fled makes El'azar's lone stand all the more striking—one man against a retreating tide and an advancing enemy.
