Corinth is a spiritual boom town suffering from a massive case of sibling rivalry. The church has fractured into warring factions, each waving the banner of their favorite celebrity preacher as a status symbol. While the city’s skyline is dominated by massive Roman construction projects, the interior of the church is rotting from petty tribalism. Paul intervenes not as a competing superstar, but as a weary architect, warning that they are building a temple that must eventually endure a trial by fire. If they don't stop acting like infants, the entire project will go up in smoke.
Paul shifts the focus from human competence to divine ownership. The 'pivot' is that growth is not a result of superior leadership, but a supernatural act of God that turns a pile of workers into a singular, holy dwelling place.

Corinth was destroyed in 146 BC and rebuilt by Julius Caesar in 44 BC. In Paul's day, it was a massive construction site, making his 'foundation' metaphors incredibly literal to locals.
The 'gold, silver, and precious stones' Paul mentions were the standard materials for the interior of Greek temples, whereas common houses used the wood, hay, and straw that often fueled city-wide fires.
