The F.O.G Message *

[1] Only two days remained before the sacred festivals of Passover and Unleavened Bread. Behind closed doors, the chief priests and religious scholars plotted to secretly arrest Jesus and put Him to death.[27] Jesus told them, "All of you will desert Me tonight. As Scripture says, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'[28] But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."[29] Peter boldly declared, "Even if everyone else deserts You, I never will!"[30] Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, Peter: Tonight, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny knowing Me three times."[31] But Peter insisted even more vehemently, "Even if I have to die with You, I will never deny You!" And all the others made the same pledge.[32] They came to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus told His disciples, "Sit here while I pray."[33] He took Peter, James, and John with Him. Anguish and horror began to overwhelm His soul.[34] He confided in them, "My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch."[35] Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that, if possible, He might be spared from what was coming.[36] "Abba, Father," He cried out, "everything is possible for You. Please take this cup of suffering away from Me. Yet I want Your will, not Mine."[37] He returned to find the disciples sleeping. "Simon," He said to Peter, "are you asleep? Couldn't you stay awake for just one hour?[38] Stay alert and pray! Otherwise temptation will overpower you. For the spirit is willing, but the human body is weak."[39] He went away again and prayed the same prayer of surrender to the Father's will.[40] When He returned, they were sleeping again, unable to keep their eyes open. They had no excuse for their failure.[41] Returning the third time, He said, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The time has come. Look, the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.[42] Get up! Let's go! Look, My betrayer is here!"[43] Just then, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived with a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests, religious scholars, and elders.[44] The betrayer had arranged a signal: "The one I kiss is your man. Arrest Him and lead Him away under guard."[45] Judas walked straight to Jesus, saying, "Rabbi!" and kissed Him affectionately - turning this gesture of friendship into treachery.[46] The armed men seized Jesus and arrested Him.[47] One of Jesus's followers drew his sword and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his ear.[48] Jesus addressed the mob: "Am I leading a rebellion, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest Me?[49] Every day I was with you, teaching in the Temple courts, yet you didn't arrest Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."[50] Then all His disciples deserted Him and fled, just as He had predicted.[51] A young man, wearing only a linen garment, was following Jesus. When the crowd seized him,[52] He fled naked, leaving his garment behind - a vivid image of the disciples' complete abandonment of Jesus.[53] They led Jesus to the high priest's house, where all the chief priests, elders, and religious scholars had gathered.[54] Peter followed at a distance, right into the high priest's courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.[55] The chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin searched for evidence against Jesus to justify putting Him to death, but they found none.[56] Many gave false testimony against Him, but their statements contradicted each other.[57] Some stood up with this false accusation:[58] "We heard Him say, 'I will destroy this Temple made by human hands and in three days build another not made by hands.'"[59] Yet even these testimonies conflicted with each other.[60] The high priest stood up and demanded of Jesus, "Have You no answer to these charges?"[61] But Jesus remained silent. Again the high priest questioned Him: "Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?"[62] Jesus replied boldly, "I AM. And you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven."[63] The high priest tore his clothes in outrage: "What further testimony do we need?[64] You have heard His blasphemy! What is your verdict?" They all condemned Him as worthy of death.[65] Some began to spit on Him. They blindfolded Him, struck Him with their fists, and demanded, "Prophesy!" The guards took Him and beat Him.[66] Meanwhile, Peter was below in the courtyard. A servant girl of the high priest came by.[67] Seeing Peter warming himself by the fire, she looked closely at him and said, "You were with Jesus of Nazareth."[68] But Peter denied it: "I don't know what you're talking about!" He went out to the gateway, and a rooster crowed.[69] The servant girl saw him there and again told those standing around, "This man is one of them!"[70] Again Peter denied it. After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean."[71] Peter began to call down curses on himself and swore, "I don't know this man you're talking about!"[72] Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered Jesus's words: "Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." He broke down and wept bitterly.
