When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but that instead a riot was breaking out, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “You bear the responsibility.”

[24] When Pilate saw he was getting nowhere and a riot was brewing, he performed a symbolic act that would haunt him forever. He took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, declaring, "I am innocent of this Man's blood. The responsibility is yours!"
