[5] He rescued us—not because of any righteous deeds we had done, but purely from His abundant mercy. He accomplished this through the cleansing power of rebirth and the renewing work of His Holy Spirit.

(not by works that are in righteousness that we did but according to His kindness,) He did save us, through a bathing of regeneration, and a renewing of the Holy Spirit,
