As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her.

As He approached the town gate, He encountered a funeral procession. The dead person was a young man, the only son of a widow. Without husband or son, her future seemed hopeless, and a large crowd from the town was supporting her in her grief.
