*Scholars are unsure about this word, which is a loan word from Hittite-Hurrian. Most translate this as 'household idols'. Its basic root meaning is demon or spirit which pagans may have believed had healing properties. They were prized possessions of many households as we can see in Genesis 31:19 for example - but detestable to יהוה (Yahweh).
