“I paid a high price for my citizenship,” said the commander. “But I was born a citizen,” Paul replied.

The commanding officer answered, “I bought my citizenship for a great price.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”

(28) But the Chiliarch answered, "I bought this citizenship for a great sum of money!" But Paul said, "I was born one!"

[28] The commander revealed his own path to citizenship: "I paid a fortune for my citizenship." Paul's response carried quiet dignity: "But I was born a citizen."
