When last did you bow to the King?

Only one thing is needed, to spend time at His feet, completely in awe at the majesty and wisdom of Him.

There is a beautiful moment in Luke 10:42 where two beloved friends of Jesus, Mary and Martha, who just happen to be sisters are contrasted for us. These two sisters hold wisdom for us as believers and lovers of Jesus. Here is the story as recorded in Luke 10 using the Passion Translation.

Jesus Visits Martha and Mary

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their journey, they came to a village where a woman welcomed Jesus into her home. Her name was Martha and she had a sister named Mary. Mary sat down attentively before the Master, absorbing every revelation He shared.

But Martha became exasperated with finishing the numerous household chores in preparation for her guests, so she interrupted Jesus and said, “Lord, don’t you think it’s unfair that my sister left me to do all the work by myself? You should tell her to get up and help me.”

The Lord answered her, “Martha, my beloved Martha. Why are you upset and troubled, pulled away by all these many distractions? Mary has discovered the one thing most important by choosing to sit at my feet. She is undistracted, and I won’t take this privilege from her.”

Let’s find treasure here

I highlighted – the One Thing. Christianity as a whole and the key to growing in spiritual maturity comes down to the one thing of spending time at His feet. Simple communion.

This is always the one main thing, that we as believers need to want to do daily, to ensure that we never hear Jesus say, “I do not know you.” When you do this daily, even when you are in a season when you don’t feel like it, there will be one day where He totally captivates you, like He did for Mary. When you get this touch for yourself, spending time with Him will also become your non-negotiable, where you can’t even think of starting the day without Him.

This happened to me on the first day of September 2022.

I had been gradually getting more hungry for the Word of God by waking up early, and on that day I was watching a YouTube sermon. I certainly wasn’t burning with passion for every one of His words like Mary was, but on that day, the Father said, I was ready, and Jesus as my High Priest lit the flame of what little oil there. And now 8 months later as I write this, the flame is a literal inferno blaze that He continues to flame even more.

Now I know the feeling, if you are reading this, and thinking to yourself that you can’t relate. This is exactly the same place Martha was, as she came complaining to Jesus, but He lovingly said to her that Mary had found the most important thing in life, and He would never take that away from her.

I get it, you have heard of these so-called “Jesus people” before, and if you have never had a Damascus road moment, and all you’ve experienced of Jesus is stale old religion, then yes, Mary and I possibly sound alien to you, maybe even offensive.

That’s fine, because I have good news, I was exactly where you are right now, before it happened as I sat on my couch, drinking a coffee, and watching a sermon on my laptop. He will meet you no matter where you are, even if all you have is a drop of oil in your lamp, because it doesn’t matter, He can set your heart on fire for Him all over again.

If you are not sure what to do, I encourage you to have an honest conversation with God. You don’t have to be all religious and pious here, He can handle anything you throw at him, including all your shame and disappointment in life, maybe even in Him. If you are ready to seek Him, maybe this little prayer will help you get the ball rolling.

One Thing Prayer

My Lord Jesus, I have heard rumours about your love and plans for me. But in all honesty, right now, it feels as if there is a massive chasm between us.

Lord Jesus, I ask could you show me that you are real?

Could I get a glimpse of the love that everyone says you have for me?

I know I’m not perfect, only You are, and I ask that you meet me in this moment, just as you did with the Apostle Paul as he was heading to Damascus.

I don’t want to simply know about you anymore, I can’t do that anymore! I want to truly know for myself who you are and what you mean for my life. If it’s true that you look favourably on me, let me know your ways, so that I may understand you more fully and continue to enjoy your favour.

In Jesus’s name, I pray. Amen!

God Bless you today

I hope that helps you my brother or sister, but remember your own words to Him are always best. If you genuinely want to meet Him, you will be surprised at how He comes running to you.

And also how quickly you will find yourself bowing, at His feet.

I know I sure was!
